Psalm 23 – A psalm of victory, not just at death but while we’re alive!

I’ve read this psalm on so many funeral bulletins,  but once I studied this out, going back to the Hebrew translations of key words, this psalm has become my psalm of victory for my life!   Please give it a read and then join me as I share a deeper revelation of this psalm as Holy Spirit guided me through it!  I’ll go through each, pick out key words, give you the word in Hebrew and the definition.  Once done, when you read it at the end, you will undoubtedly read it with fresh eyes of understanding.

Psalm 23 (KJV)
23 The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

23 The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
Shepherd – “Roi”- protector, and ruler of a flock of man.
In an unenclosed country, early in the morning the shepherd led the flock from the fold to where they would be pastured.  Here he watched them all day, taking care   that none strayed, but if one did he would seek diligently til he found and brought it back.  In lands like Philistine, the shepherd has to lead them to a water source.  At night he’d bring them back to the fold counting as they passed under the rod to     make sure none were missing.  Even then he would have to guard them through the night from the attack of wild beasts or thieves.
want – “XQG”  – to lack, be without, to diminish.

rod – “HAY” -a stick (for walking), a club (of shepherd’s implement), a sceptre (mark of authority)

Now that you’ve read through the definitions, with the Holy Spirit guiding which definitions for me to note, read The Passion Translation of Psalm 23 below.  I believe you’ll agree that Psalm 23 is a song, a melody we need to sing forth as it is David’s poetic praise to God!

The Lord is my best Friend and my Shepherd.  I always have more than enough.
He offers a resting place for me in His luxurious love.
His tracks take me to an oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss.
That’s where He restores and revives my life.  He opens before pathways to God’s pleasure and leads me along in His footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honor to His name.
Lord, even when Your path takes me through the valley of the deepest darkness, fear will not conquer me, for You already have!
You remain close to me and lead me through it all the way.  Your authority is my strength and peace.  The comfort of Your love takes away my fear.  I’ll never be lonely for You are near.
You become my delicious feast even when my enemies dare to fight.  You annoint me with with the fragrance of the Holy Spirit; you give me all I can drink of You until my heart overflows.
So why would I fear the future?  For your goodness and love pursue me all the days of my life.  Then afterward, when my life is through, I’ll return to You glorious presence to be forevermore.
